Joe B. Roles, age 86, of Annandale, VA and formerly of Union, WV, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at his home in Annandale, VA. Born December 14, 1932 near Union, WV, he was the son of the late Brown S. Roles and Myrtle Talbott Roles. Joe graduated from Union High School and went on to earn a BS at Concord University and serve in the U.S. Army. His career included owning his own commercial construction company and real estate sales. He retired from his home inspection business in the early 2000’s. He was an active member of the Prime Time Toastmasters Club and a regular competitor in speech contests. In keeping with Joe’s wishes, his remains were cremated and there was a graveside service held on Saturday, September 28th, 2019 at Green Hill Cemetery in Union, WV. We will miss his humorous stories.
Joe was one of the funniest Toastmasters speakers I ever heard. His secret was great timing and self-effacing humor – making fun of his roots and his life in West Virginia. I lost several club-level Humorous Speech contests to Joe when we were both members of the Bennie Bough club. I never did finish ahead of him! He was also one of the nicest people you could ever meet. A great Toastmaster!
